About my boulder opal jewelry

Opals are one of the world’s most beautiful and sought-after gemstones. Their vibrant, iridescent flashes of color have given them an almost mystical appeal throughout the ages. Of the four types of naturally occurring opals--black, boulder, crystal, and white--black opals and boulder opals are most highly prized for their intensity and depth of color. Both are considered true precious gems; both are found only in Australia.

I was first introduced to boulder opals while living and teaching in Australia in the mid-1970s. For more than three decades, I've been highlighting these alluring gemstones in my jewelry.

Unlike other gems such as diamonds or sapphires, each opal is unique. The primary factors determining their value are the brightness, vibrancy, and clarity of their color, and their size (measured in carats). For this reason, each piece of my jewelry incorporating opals is one-of-a-kind and the prices vary accordingly.
